The Royal Academy of Art: Artist in Conversation with Hew Locke RA

Inspired by the RA’s Summer Exhibition theme ‘Only Connect’, Hew Locke RA and writer Melissa Chemam sat down for a conversation exploring whether creativity can inspire connection.

In their conversation, Hew Locke admitted that his creativity is guided by instinct and that thinking about what you’re making too much, can shut down creativity. They dove into the ways Locke’s past informs his artistic commentary on colonialism and how ‘’Politics and art can be strange bedfellows.’’

Hew Locke produces works that invites us to engage with our politics and our entangled pasts.
